2014 Bridgestone Winter Classic Game Review

Temperatures were frigid, snow was falling, and players were gritty, determined, and focused during parts of the game.

The crowd came in at 105,491 as fans stuffed into the Big House on New Year’s Day for the 2014 Bridgestone Winter Classic, between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Dion Phaneuf and Jonathan Bernier led their Maple Leafs team to a 3-2 victory over the Red Wings, who were led by a returning Jimmy Howard along with rising defenseman Brendan Smith.

Back Strong After Christmas Break

Defense led the MSU women’s basketball team to a 50-point win over the Colgate Raiders on Sunday, Dec. 29 at the Breslin Center.

Tori Jankoska overcame her slump and led MSU with 25 points. Seventeen of her points were scored in the first half. All but one player on the Spartan roster scored at least one point. The team shot 50 percent from the field. Read More…

MSU Wrestling Puts Cradle Gear Invitational in…Cradle

Michigan State’s wrestling squad got a late Christmas present by winning the Cradle Gear Invitational by a 19-point margin. They surpsassed second-place Bloomsburg University, who had a scoring total of 86 points.

Three of MSU’s wrestlers fought their way to first place: 149-pounder Nick Trimble, 184-pounder John Rizqallah and heavyweight Mike McClure.

Howard Continues Struggles, Wings Lose in Final Period

Jimmy Howard made his debut against the Nashville Predators after being out for almost three weeks due to an injured MCL, sustained in the beginning of December. Although the starting goaltender was recently elected to represent the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics, he was not able to pull it together to get two important points for the Red Wings on Monday. 2013 has been a whirlwind of a year for Impact Sports.  As one of the many firsts this year, fall marked the inaugural semester of The Pact – the only sportstalk show on FM-radio in the mid-Michigan area.

Spartans Shut Out Wolverines in Final Game at Comerica Park

After coming up short against Michigan Tech in their first game on Friday afternoon, the Spartans were looking to bounce back against the Michigan Wolverines.

Michigan State and Michigan are scheduled to play each other four times this season, but got an early look at each other on Saturday.

Pistons Weekly Recap: December 21-27

The Detroit Pistons had a busy week, facing off against the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic.

Detroit hosted the Rockets on Saturday, where the matchup to watch was Andre Drummond against Dwight Howard. Early on, it was clear who was the better player, as Howard put up 14 points in the first quarter and forced Drummond out of the game.

Walk the Line – 2014 Rose Bowl and NFL Wk. 17 picks – 12/28/13

With the 2014 Rose Bowl less than one week away, the Michigan State Spartans are in California gearing up to face the Stanford Cardinal, who now sit as 6.5-point favorites because of, let’s just say…circumstances.

As has been pointed out in the past, these Spartans make plays, not excuses, so it will be quite an interesting afternoon on Wednesday.

Spartans Fall Short to Huskies in Shootout at GLI

This year’s Great Lakes Invitational was an experience for the ages as teams got to play outdoors at Comerica Park in Detroit. The GLI kick-started the winter festivities that will be taking place downtown through the end of December.

Michigan State and Michigan Tech needed extra time, and eventually a shootout, to determine who would advance to the Championship game.

Detroit Lions Season Review – Part 2

The 2008 season that saw the Lions go 0-16 obviously led to a lot of fan upheaval. But it also led to a lot of front office changes.

Long time general manager Matt Millen, head coach Rod Marinelli, and the rest of his coaching staff were all let go.  It was without a doubt the right time for change, and Lions owner William Clay Ford was ready to make that happen.  He hired Millen’s assistant GM Martin Mayhew as the new GM, and from there, they hired highly coveted Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz as their new head coach.   Read More…
