MSU welcomed Penn State to Jenison Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions dominated as a team with a score of 194.825-192.750. MSU is now 0-3 on the season and Penn State is 7-1.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — It was an unusual senior day as Michigan State’s opponent, Denison University, was unable to travel due to inclement weather. The team made they most of what they had with an inter-squad meet.
After falling short to the Wolverines at Joe Louis Arena, 2-1, the Spartans were looking to turn the tables in front of their home crowd at Munn Ice Arena Friday night.
After two periods of play both teams headed into the locker rooms knotted 2-2 and were even in the shot department with 24 shots on goal.
The Spartans and No. 14 Wolverines faced-off at Munn Ice Arena for their third matchup of the season. With the series tied 1-1, the Wolverines took over late in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and run away with a 5-2 victory.

The Red Wings took on the Montreal Canadiens at Joe Louis Arena on Friday evening. With a good showing from young Riley Sheahan and a strong return from veteran Daniel Alfredsson, the Wings put a solid hold on a declining Canadiens team.
Sheahan had family and friends in the stands during Friday night’s game, giving him a bit more motivation to score because the Sheahans are Habs faithful. He scored the second goal of the game, rocketing a wrist shot over the glove hand of Carey Price with 8:12 remaining in the second period.

This week, the Lady Spartans of the gymnastics team will host Penn State in their fourth annual Autism Awareness Meet. Dominique Moceanu, a 1996 Olympic gold medalist, will be making a guest appearance to support the cause.

After kicking off their indoor season at the Grand Valley State Bob Eubanks Open two weekends ago, the Michigan State track and field program is heading to South Bend, Ind. on Saturday, Jan. 25 for the Notre Dame Invitational.
The team has already showed several great performances, posting 13 individual wins at their first meet of the 2014 season at GVSU. The team took primarily sprinters, jumpers and throwers.
The first taste of victory was had by the men’s swimming and diving team January 23 in East Lansing, defeating Oakland University 154-143 and it came down to the last event to determine who would win.
The Spartan wrestling team kicks off a busy weekend with matches against No. 12 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., at 7 p.m. tonight, followed by a home dual Sunday against No. 15 Illinois.
The Spartans (5-6, 0-3) are coming off a home loss to then No. 2 Minnesota last Friday. Michigan (7-2, 3-0) upset the Gophers in Ann Arbor, 19-14, last Sunday.
The Michigan State Spartans (12-7, 4-2) were defeated by the Illinois Fighting Illini (9-10, 2-4) Thursday night, 61-51. This is the Spartans’ second loss in a row. Although MSU had a disappointing night against Illinois, there was a player that managed to make her presence known.
Junior forward Becca Mills started the game off for the Spartans with their first seven points in the first four minutes of the game. Mills finished with 17 points, four rebounds and 5-5 from the free throw line. Mills’ points allowed her to be tied for the most in a Big Ten game this season.
Perhaps the perfect lead into Saturday’s basketball game against the dastardly maize and blue is a matchup on the ice at Munn Ice Arena between the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines.
These two teams have met twice already this season, albeit one was not an official game and they have both won one game apiece. At the consolation game of the GLI (Great Lakes Invitational), the Spartans made a mockery of the Wolverines in a 3-0 whitewash. However, the Wolverines returned the favor with a 2-1 victory over the Spartans at Joe Louis Arena last Thursday.
That is how Michigan State head coach Suzy Merchant described the game against Illinois. The Spartans suffered their second conference loss, 61-51, against Illinois.
“From the get-go, from warm-ups, it just was evident that there just wasn’t a lot of effort and passion going on right there,” Merchant said.
Michigan State announced Thursday that junior forward, Branden Dawson, will be out for four to five weeks with a broken hand.
Dawson will undergo surgery this evening on his right hand after breaking it by slamming it on a table during a film session.

A long-anticipated rivalry game since the 2013 Western Conference Semifinals was played at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday when the Blackhawks came into Detroit to take on the Red Wings.
From the starting gate the two teams were quick, gritty and ready to put the puck in the net. The Blackhawks hit the scoreboard first with a goal from Marian Hossa, that was quickly followed by a second goal two and a half minutes later from Andrew Shaw to put the Hawks up 2-0 with 9:30 to play in the first period.
