Baseball season is less than three weeks away, but before the first pitch is thrown, a new state-of-the-art lighting addition is set to be installed at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field.

On Jan. 3, Michigan State Athletics announced that due to an anonymous donation from a Spartan alum, amounting a total of $1.4 million, both McLane Stadium and softball’s Secchia Stadium are receiving new LED lights from Musco Sports Lighting.

“It’s a historical moment for our program,” MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. “I think it’s something that our program deserves.”

Baseball was the first varsity sport at Michigan State, with its inaugural season in 1884. Back then, Michigan State was known as Michigan Agricultural College, or M.A.C.

During a span of 135 years, McLane Stadium has witnessed the very first football game played at Old College Field in 1896, the dedication of Kobs Field in 1969 to John Herman Kobs, former head coach of Michigan State baseball from 1925-63 and the installation of Sports Field Inc.’s electric field heating system, the first of its kind, in the summer of 2015.

Musco Sports Lighting is currently installing its Total Light Control LED lights at McLane Stadium, which are identical to those used in Spartan Stadium, Jack Breslin Student Events Center, Munn Ice Arena, DeMartin Stadium and the Duffy Daugherty Football Building.

According to the Musco Sports Lighting website, key features of the Total Light Control LED lights include:

  • Enhanced visibility
  • Energy efficiency
  • Total Light Control
  • Cost savings of over $110,000 in the next decade

For senior Captain Dan Chmielewski, it is a humbling experience.

“(It is) definitely an honor and something I will look back on for a long time,” Chmielewski said.

Chmielewski and his team will play the Spartans’ first night game at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field on Friday, Apr. 5 against Indiana State at 6:35 p.m.

Michigan State will be hosting eight additional night games this season, including Indiana on Apr. 19, Northwestern on Apr. 28 and Illinois on May 16 and 17.
