MSU AD Mark Hollis retires in wake of Nassar sentencing

EAST LANSING, Mich. — After Michigan State president Lou Anna K. Simon resigned on Wednesday following the sentencing of former MSU doctor Larry Nassar to between 40 and 175 years in prison, athletic director Mark Hollis resigned from his role on Friday morning.

“It’s been an absolute honor to guide the athletic department,” Hollis said “Today, I’m announcing my retirement. … I’m not running away from anything. I’m running toward something. Comfort and compassion for the survivors. … Togetherness for my family.”

A press conference held on Friday morning allowed the MSU alum to send in his resignation following the sentencing case that has rocked the entire university which prompted the resignation of Simon earlier in the week. Hollis’s role in the situation has been under question despite not being named specifically in any of the victim impact statements from the last week in Ingham County court.

“The past year has been a challenge at Michigan State,” added Hollis. “I feel good with every decision I made at the time I made it, based on the information that was available to me.”

Hollis has presided over one of the most successful eras in the history of Michigan State athletics, as Spartan teams have won one national championship and 30 Big Ten titles since Hollis took over from Ron Mason in 2008. Updates to both Spartan Stadium and the Breslin Center have been completed under Hollis’s watch, and the entire athletic department has moved into new offices at 1855 Place on Harrison Road.

While it was reported Thursday that former president Simon will maintain her privileges at the university, Hollis plans to have no further role at MSU. He did mention that he would comply with any investigation, be it through MSU or with the FBI.
