Memorial Day Weekend is a Race Fans Christmas

The Super Bowl of Formula 1, the 100th running of the biggest race in the world and the longest NASCAR race of the season – all in one day. What’s not to like?

The Grand Prix of Monaco, the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 will take place this Sunday morning, afternoon and evening, respectively. Three different places in the world, three distinctly different races, and one unbelievable day of racing.

Due to me being halfway across the world in Israel, I will keep this weekend preview relatively short, as I have limited internet access and am enjoying my first time in the country.

Formula 1: Grand Prix of Monaco – Nico Rosberg has been dominant this season, after his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton won his second consecutive championship last season. Hamilton has had many part failures and has zero wins this season, so Rosberg will be the favorite. Max Verstappen, who is 18 years old, won his first Grand Prix last weekend. Yes – 18. I expect the Mercedes teammates, along with Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel from Ferrari, to dominate the race and one of them to end up in victory lane in the streets of Monte Carlo.

IndyCar: Indianapolis 500 – Simon Pagenaud has been extremely dominant this season in his No. 22 car for Team Penske. James Hinchliffe, who sustained a career-threatening injury last year at this track, ended up winning the pole last weekend. Helio Castroneves is the leading active driver in 500 wins with three. I expect Pagenaud to win, but we know anything can happen as we saw with the late Dan Wheldon and JR Hildebrand a few years ago.

NASCAR: Coca-Cola 600 – 600 miles around Charlotte Motor Speedway at night can equate to two things: fatigue and speed. Coming off his win in the All-Star Race last weekend, Joey Logano is looking to get his first points win of the season and clinch his Chase spot.  Martin Truex Jr. will start on the pole. Kyle Busch will also look to cross off CMS on his list of places where he hasn’t won in the Sprint Cup Series yet. Kevin Harvick ran very well in the All-Star Race before a steering box failure derailed his run. Kyle Larson, who won a showdown segment, was leading with three laps to go as well, and he will be strong in the Coke 600. I expect the Joe Gibbs Racing drivers to dominate, per usual, with a couple others mixed in there.

Enjoy the weekend of racing everybody – and see you when I get back from Israel!

Monaco: NBCSN, 7:00 a.m. ET

Indy: 12:00 p.m. ET

Charlotte: 6:00 p.m. ET
