Top Ten MSU Women’s Basketball Players Countdown – #10

Over the years, many Spartans have demonstrated their skills on the court. In the lead-up to the women’s basketball season, Impact Sports takes a look at the top 10 women’s basketball players in Spartan history.

Taking the No. 10 spot to start is recent MSU graduate Klarissa Bell, a 5-foot-11 guard from East Lansing. With East Lansing as her hometown, it seemed only right that she attended Michigan State and made a name for herself in the Spartan history books.

Cetera Washington Returns to Kalamazoo as Assistant Coach for WMU

Cetera Washington’s homecoming may not be a trending topic on Twitter orreceive constant broadcast coverage or get a spread in the pages of Sports Illustrated.

But the former Michigan State and Loy Norrix High basketball standout could not be more excited to join the coaching staff of her hometown Western Michigan Broncos.

“To be able to come back home and come back to the city that supported me throughout my entire career from elementary school to middle school to high school is awesome,” Washington said.

Spartans to Play Georgia Tech in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

The ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchups were announced for the 2014 women’s basketball season last month, and the Spartans will take on Georgia Tech at home in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The game will take place December 4, 2014 and will be their second time meeting in program history and the second time in the Challenge.

Madison Williams Endures Another Torn Right ACL

After three previous ACL injuries, Michigan State’s redshirt junior Madison Williams suffered another ACL tear in her right knee.

Her injury was discovered on Thursday, March 27. Surgery was performed on the same day. It could take anywhere from four to six months to recover.

Spartans NCAA Tournament Journey Ends Tuesday Night

After getting through the first round in the NCAA Tournament, the Lady Spartans were in Chapel Hill, N.C. Tuesday night to take on the No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels.

The Spartans fell to the Tar Heels 62-53 and will not be advancing in the tournament. MSU head coach Suzy Merchant said how difficult this game was compared to others.

Spartans Awarded No. 5 Seed in NCAA Tournament

The madness of March ensues in men’s and women’s basketball.

MSU is back for a sixth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The No. 5 seed women’s basketball team was placed in the Stanford region, and their appearance marks the 14th showing in program history.

They will be facing No. 12 seed Hampton (28-4), the MEAC tournament champions. The Pirates have won their last 18 games. Freshman guard, Malia Tate-DeFreitas, who averages 18.5 points per game, leads them.

Women’s Basketball Recognizes Players at Annual Banquet

With a Big Ten Championship under their belt and a NCAA tournament run on the horizon, the Michigan State women’s basketball team took time to celebrate and have a little fun.

The team held its annual banquet at the Breslin Center to honor its players and to celebrate their Big Ten Championship.

Spartans Head to Semi Finals of Big Ten Tournament

With the regular season over and a Big Ten championship title under their belt, the No. 2 seed Michigan State Spartans headed to Indianapolis, Ind. to start the tournament.

The Spartans first game of the tournament was played against, No. 7 seed Michigan. The Spartans beat Michigan 61-58 and are now headed to the semi finals.

Michigan State Clinches Big Ten Title on Senior Night

On Sunday, the No. 21 Michigan State Spartans made history.

They conquered the Indiana Hoosiers, 76-56, to clinch the Big Ten Title for the fourth time in school history. They share first place with No. 8 Penn State.

The game started off going back-and-forth as Aerial Powers scored the first points of the game hitting a jumper from the wing. MSU led with 11:29 to go in the first half, but the score was close, 14-12.

Lady Spartans Play with Big Ten Title on the Line

After a great road win against Northwestern, the Michigan State Spartans (20-8, 12-3) return back home to take on Indiana (18-10, 5-10).

Along with this being the final game of the season, it is also the swan song for seniors Annalise Pickrel and Klarissa Bell. Both will be honored after the game Sunday night.

A Victory for Spartans in Last Road Game of Season

With the regular season coming to an end, the Lady Spartans are having a busy week. With three games this week the Spartans are off to a great start. Coming off of a great win at home against Minnesota, they headed to Evanston, Ill. to take on Northwestern.

In the Thursday night game, the Spartans took home a 75-44 victory over Northwestern. This was the Spartans last road game of the season. With this win, the Spartans are now 12-3 in the Big Ten. They are now tied with No. 17 Nebraska and No. 11 Penn State for first in the Big Ten, and they have only one game left to try and break the tie.

Spartans Head to Northwestern for Their Last Road Game

As the regular season nears its end, the No. 21 Michigan State Spartans travel to Northwestern in hopes of winning their final road game.

Michigan State is coming off of a 75-61 win over Minnesota and Northwestern is on a six-game losing streak after losing to Ohio State, 71-62.

Compared to men’s basketball, women’s basketball often gets less attention and less fans in the arena. Though smaller in number, the women’s team has picked up some very dedicated fans. One of them is Stephanie Russell.

At every home game for the Spartans, Russell is the one standout voice that you can hear throughout the entire game.

Jankoska Earns Big Ten Weekly Awards

Michigan State guard Tori Jankoska earned Big Ten weekly awards for the first time on Tuesday. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week and was also among three players who were named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll.

In the last two wins against Wisconsin (76-66) and Minnesota (75-61), Jankoska averaged 17.5 points, six assists and 2.5 steals. She has been very efficient as well, only turning the ball over three times in 77 minutes of play.

Spartans Return Home to Host the Gophers

Michigan State is on a role the past few games and it looks like that streak may continue.

The No. 23 Michigan State Spartans (18-8, 10-3) return home to host the Minnesota Gophers (17-10, 6-7) on Monday.
