Michigan State enjoyed a dream season in 2013, finishing 13-1 with a Rose Bowl victory over Stanford.
Now, over two months removed from that season, the Spartans have began reaping the benefits. They wrapped up one of the best recruiting classes in the conference after National Signing Day.
Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard had a breakout year in 2013. He was crowned the nation’s best defensive back after winning the Jim Thorpe Award and helped pace the Spartans’ defense to a top five national ranking.
Dennard’s individual success, along with the team’s on-field success, has allowed his NFL draft stock to skyrocket.
In recent years, Michigan State’s mantra behind recruiting has been doing more with less.
Players such as Le’Veon Bell and Darqueze Dennard, who were both two-star recruits coming out of high school, developed into nationally recognized names during their time in East Lansing.
Michigan State continued its football success on National Signing Day by getting a verbal commitment from Malik McDowell in front of his classmates and a live video feed that reached over 15,000 viewers.
McDowell, a 6-foot-6, 292 pound defensive lineman from Southfield, Mich is a consensus five-star prospect and the highest rated recruit in the state of Michigan.
With National Signing Day almost 24 hours away, the Michigan State coaching staff is feeling the most pressure since the Rose Bowl. Mark Dantonio and his staff are breathing a little easier Monday night as they earned a commitment from one of the top players on their radar.
Craig Evans, a 6-foot-3, 305 pound defensive tackle from Sun Prairie, Wisc., was originally a Wisconsin commit, but announced his decision to flip to MSU on Twitter Monday night.
Michigan State enjoyed their most successful football season of all-time in 2013, finishing 13-1 after defeating Stanford (11-2) in the 100th Rose Bowl Game.
Much of that success was due in part to one of the most dominant defense in the nation. The Spartans ended the season allowing just over 13 points per game along with an average of 86 yards rushing allowed per game.
