The Pact – #49 – 9/22/14

Locally, it has been a successful weekend for the state of Michigan overall as Michigan State football dominated, the Detroit Lions finally found a way past the division foe Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Tigers looked headed to the playoffs with the return of a top pitcher.

Lions’ Defense Too Much For Packers

The Detroit Lions bounced back from their Week 2 loss with a 19-7 win at home over the rival Green Bay Packers.

Ford Field was rocking when Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers’ electrifying offense was held to an uncharacteristic 223 total yards. The Lions’ defense continued their streak of holding opponents to less than 80 rushing yards per game. Second-year running back sensation Eddie Lacy  topped out at 11 carries for 36 yards, and his counterpart James Starks finished with eight rushing attempts for 38 yards. Read More…

Who Will be the Next Big Ten Hockey School?

It is a question that has surrounded fans for the past few years: “Will the Big Ten hockey conference ever expand, and who will step up?”

Wisconsin head coach Mike Eaves re-ignited the conversation in an interview with the Journal Sentinel. In the interview, Eaves expressed his desire to see the six-team conference grow in the near future, and listed Illinois, Indiana and Northwestern as potential additions.

Fischer and Draper Lead Red Team to Alumni Victory

The Detroit Red Wings’ annual Alumni and Celebrity Game was a high-scoring, enjoyable time for fans alike.

The score of the game was a 12-10 final, giving the “Red Team”, the victory.

The 2014 Alumni and Celebrity Game hosted a slew of veterans, including players like Jiří Fischer, Kris Draper, Chris Chelios, Dallas Drake and Kirk Maltby.

New Faces for Spartans Help Finish Out Blowout Against EMU

Sixty-three players played in the first half. Seven freshmen defenders played at one time.

The No. 11 ranked Spartans bounced back after their a bye week following loss in Eugene with a 73-14 dominating performance against Eastern Michigan. Connor Cook, who only attempted six passes, ended up with 83 yards and two touchdowns.  He also had a rushing touchdown of his own. Cook sat out the majority of the second quarter and the entire second half while MSU maintained a comfortable lead. Read More…

Field Hockey Tops Ohio State, Gets First Conference Win

The No. 16 Michigan State Spartans field hockey team traveled down to Columbus, Ohio this weekend to take on Ohio State in their first taste of Big 10 competition this season. The Spartans topped the Ohio State University Buckeyes in overtime with a goal from senior forward Abby Barker to go 1-0 in conference play.

Ohio State struck first with a goal by freshman Maddy Humphrey off of a penalty corner. About nine minutes later, the Buckeyes made it 2-0 when senior Kaitlyn Wagner hit home a rebound past the Spartan goalkeeper, Sierra Patton. Read More…

Spartans Dominate Eagles, Win Convincingly

After an explosive offensive performance in the first half, Michigan State held on to their large lead, winning 73-14 against Eastern Michigan. The Spartan defense forced five turnovers while the offense ended up with 496 yards of total offense. Read More…

Offense Explosive Against EMU, Lead 49-0 at Half

It was a busy, first half 30 minutes for the Spartan offense, as they scored on nearly every possession against Eastern Michigan.

With a 49-0 score at halftime, touchdowns came from Connor Cook, Jeremy Langford, Delton Williams and R.J. Shelton on the ground.Tony Lippett had two receiving touchdowns and Tyler O’Connor hooked up with A.J. Troup on a a 21-yard touchdown pass as well. Read More…

The Big Ten Needs to Stick Together

The Spartans’ loss to the University of Oregon Ducks was a tough one to say the least. It got plenty of national attention, with many asking “Can a strong defense hold up against such a strong and innovative offense?”

After responding to an early deficit, and ending the half up 24-18, Spartan fans thought it was their time to show the nation what great defense can do. However, after the half, Michigan State could not respond to Oregon’s offense. Read More…

Athlete of the Week: Eke Ofili

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Eke Ofili. A native of Asaba, Nigeria, Ofili is in his senior year as a Kinesiology major at Michigan State. He has just began his fifth year as a forward for the men’s club soccer team.

Earlier this month, Ofili became the all-time leader in points for MSU Club Soccer with 60 in his career.  He is currently second all-time in goals scored with 24. Ofili won a NIRSA NCCS National Championship with the men’s club soccer team in 2012. Read More…

Breaking News: Danny DeKeyser Re-signs

The long anticipation of a contract extension for the 24-year old defenseman, Danny DeKeyser, is over.

Today, DeKeyser’s agent and Red Wings general manager, Ken Holland, came to an agreement on a two-year contract, with a salary-cap hit of $2.187 million annually.

Preparation for his second season will get under way this weekend at training camp, where the Red Wings will analyze their young team and morphed defense.
