No. 25 Spartans Fall in Close Battle to Pittsburgh

The MSU gymnastics team fell in another close battle versus Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon with a score of 193.025 – 192.525.

The Spartans were missing a major piece not having Alina Cartwright in the rotation for the meet. Cartwright led the Spartans and head coach Kathy Klages shared that it was to be a precautionary decision regarding a neck injury.

Penn State Breaks MSU’s Big Ten Undefeated Streak

Michigan State entered the game against Penn State as No. 1 in the Big Ten standings. But Penn State was a great competitor and knocked the Spartans off their top spot, 66-54. The Spartans are now 4-1 in the Big Ten Conference.

The top scorers for the game were Annalise Pickrel with 17 followed by Klarissa Bell and Aerial Powers with 12. Powers also led the team with 10 rebounds. Powers’ rebounds were not enough however. Read More…

Powers and Pickrel Earn Big Ten Weekly Awards

Redshirt freshman Aerial Powers was awarded Big Ten freshman of the week for the third time this season Monday afternoon. Senior Annalise Pickrel was also awarded as one of the three players to be recognized on the conference’s player of the week honor roll.

22 of 24: Spartans Defeat Wolverines Once Again

The Spartan women’s basketball team traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., Sunday to play their in-state rival, the University of Michigan Wolverines, in the teams’ only matchup of the season.

The Spartans beat the Wolverines, 79-72 and now start their Big Ten schedule 3-0 for the third time in the last four years.

Spartans Open 2014, Lose Victory Plank to No. 16 Illinois

The ‘Victory Plank’ will not be coming to East Lansing for a fourth straight year.

The Spartans fell to the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois in their home opener Friday night. With a strong start from the Spartans and close competition throughout the night, the meet came down to the wire. In the end, the Illini edged the Spartans by a final score of 195.352 – 194.150.

Picking through the Corn Field

After the win against Colgate University on Dec. 29, Aerial Powers said she was working on improving her rebounding. Against Nebraska, she did just that in the Spartans’ upset of the No. 16 Cornhuskers, 70-57.

Powers recorded her 4th fourth double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. She also had five fouls and four turnovers.

“Even if I mess up, I don’t focus too much on that, I focus on doing everything right,” Powers said. Read More…

Back Strong After Christmas Break

Defense led the MSU women’s basketball team to a 50-point win over the Colgate Raiders on Sunday, Dec. 29 at the Breslin Center.

Tori Jankoska overcame her slump and led MSU with 25 points. Seventeen of her points were scored in the first half. All but one player on the Spartan roster scored at least one point. The team shot 50 percent from the field. Read More…

Freshmen of on the Michigan State Women’s Basketball team have been showing their talent in the past two season games. Redshirted freshman Branndais Agee is no exception.

The Spartans entered following a great win last week against Ferris State. And tonight they did it again, beating Grand Valley 91-47. The game started off slow for the Spartans, but they picked it up and came out on top. Read More…

After Loss to Cowgirls, Spartans Look Ahead To Hoyas

The Spartans, coming off a 63-57 loss against Oklahoma State, are ready to take on Georgetown for the second time in team history in their last matchup of the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic.

Head coach Suzy Merchant is looking for more offensive play out of her team, but she is not dwelling on yesterday’s loss.

Spartans Travel to Puerto Rico, Take on 8-0 Cowgirls

Escaping the cold of Michigan, the Spartans play their first matchup of the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan against No. 13 Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. today.

Coming off of an 80-62 win against Oakland University, the Spartans are hoping to break the 2-2 all-time series tie against the Cowgirls.
