Track and Field Looking to Keep Their Momentum This Weekend

The school year may be quickly coming to a close, but Michigan State track and field athletes are just getting started.

For the third weekend in a row, the team will be splitting up competition in three different locations. The Spartans will be represented at the Drake Relays (Des Moines, Iowa), the GINA Relays (Hillsdale, Mich.) and Ashland University Alumni Open (Ashland, Ohio). Each location was picked specifically for certain events, in an effort to find the best competition in preparation for the Big Ten Outdoor Championship taking place May 16-18.

Big Ten Women’s Golf Championship Preview

Wednesday afternoon, the Michigan State Spartan women’s golf team headed out to French Lick, Ind. looking to bring a Big Ten Championship back to East Lansing.

The Spartans are coming off of a second place finish at last week’s Lady Buckeye Invitational. Freshman Kelly Grassel led the way with a 3-over 219 (78-71-70), finishing just one stroke shy of first place.

Spartans Begin B1G Journey

The No. 61 eighth seeded, Michigan State men’s tennis team will begin the Big Ten Tournament at the outdoor tennis courts on Thursday at 10 a.m. against ninth-seeded Nebraska.

There are a couple of reasons the Spartans should feel confident going into Thursday’s battle. MSU is 10-1 at home this season and MSU defeated Nebraska last month, 4-3.

Baseball Rockets past Toledo to Recover from Weekend Sweep

Michigan State rocketed back after a weekend sweep, with a win over Toledo Tuesday.

The Spartans suffered an embarrassing weekend sweep at the hands of Indiana, and they were back on the field Tuesday afternoon with some vengeance. The Toledo Rockets were their prey.  Michigan State was able to regain their stride against the Rockets as they pulled out a 4-2 win.

Spartans Land 4-Star Quarterback Lewerke

Michigan State’s 2013 season that ended with a Rose Bowl victory and has continued to pay dividends on the national recruiting trail, as the Spartans landed 2015 quarterback Brian Lewerke from Phoenix, Ariz.

The 6-foot-3, 195 pound pro-style quarterback from Pinnacle High School threw for 2,700 yards and 33 touchdowns his junior season. He also had over 500 rushing yards and nine interceptions.

Kelly Smith Leads Spartans to First Series Win

It was a successful weekend for the Spartans as they won their first Big Ten series of the season in Iowa City, Iowa defeating the Hawkeyes 1-0 and 4-0.

The momentum coming from senior pitcher Kelly Smith propelled MSU to victory.

Spartans Complete Senior Weekend Sweep

For the Michigan State men’s tennis team, winning at home has become a recurring theme this season. The Spartans defeated No. 59 Indiana, 6-1, en route to their fourth consecutive home win.

“I don’t know, maybe it’s the fans, we get it done at home,” junior Harry Jadun said.

Last Leg: Remembering the Boston Marathon Bombing

Monday, April 21 will mark the first anniversary of the tragic events that plagued one of the oldest and most well-known running events in the world: the Boston Marathon.

Men’s Golf Prepares for 2014 Boilermaker Invitational

With the Big Ten Championship just over two weeks away, the Michigan State men’s golf team will look to fine-tune its play in West Lafayette, Ind. this weekend at the Boilermaker Invitational.

The Spartans are coming off a tie for ninth at the Hawkeye Invitational last weekend, and have not placed in the top three in a tournament since early March when they finished third in the Colleton River Collegiate.

Spartans Sink Boilermakers

Michigan State (10-13, 4-6) started off senior weekend with a bang, defeating No. 28 Purdue 5-2 at the outdoor tennis courts.

“It feels good to finally get one, especially for the seniors who were trying to give them a good sendoff,” said freshman Brett Forman, who won in both doubles and singles competition.

Lacrosse Looks to Bounce Back against Minnesota

After a seven-game winning streak was snapped with a loss to No. 19 Davenport, No. 8 Michigan State will try to regroup as they take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday.

Minnesota (8-4, 4-1) plays in the Upper Midwest Lacrosse Conference, where they are currently in second place.  They have won six of their last seven games, with the only loss coming to Minnesota-Duluth, whom MSU beat 9-5 earlier this season.
