Michigan Week on Ice

Perhaps the perfect lead into Saturday’s basketball game against the dastardly maize and blue is a matchup on the ice at Munn Ice Arena between the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines.

These two teams have met twice already this season, albeit one was not an official game and they have both won one game apiece. At the consolation game of the GLI (Great Lakes Invitational), the Spartans made a mockery of the Wolverines in a 3-0 whitewash. However, the Wolverines returned the favor with a 2-1 victory over the Spartans at Joe Louis Arena last Thursday.

BREAKING: Dawson Out 4-5 Weeks with Broken Hand

Michigan State announced Thursday that junior forward, Branden Dawson, will be out for four to five weeks with a broken hand.

Dawson will undergo surgery this evening on his right hand after breaking it by slamming it on a table during a film session.

“It’ll be fine,” Dawson said during a press conference Thursday. “I was out with an ACL injury (his freshman) year and I came back from it.” Read More…

MSU Baseball to Honor Steve Garvey

Thousands of student athletes have competed for Michigan State, but only a select few went professional.  Perhaps no greater athlete represented MSU in their sport than former MLB first baseman Steve Garvey.

Garvey, 65, played football and baseball at MSU from 1966-68 before being drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played 19 seasons for the Dodgers and San Diego Padres, making 10 All-Star games and winning the 1974 NL MVP. For his career he hit .294 with 2,599 hits and 272 home runs.

Spartans Battle Back to Beat Hoosiers

Gary Harris proved Tuesday night why he is highly regarded as a top 10 pick in the NBA draft next year. Harris helped lead the Spartans to a 71-66 win against Indiana University.

Harris only had four points at halftime, but exploded in the second half, finishing the game with 24 points and five steals. Harris shot 8-13 from the floor and 4-6 from three point range. He did not miss a free throw.

Izzo Faces off against Former Assistant Coach in Matchup

This will be a game you do not want to miss, as the Michigan State Spartans’ head coach Tom Izzo faces off against his old assistant coach and current Indiana head coach, Tom Crean.

The No. 3 Spartans (17-1, 5-0) are preparing to battle against the Indiana Hoosiers (12-6, 2-3) at the Breslin Center Tuesday night.

Spartans Prevail over Fighting Illini

In their first real road test, the Michigan State Spartans defeated the University of Illinois, 78-62, Saturday night in Champaign, Ill.

MSU came out slow, but had a consistent attack led by Gary Harris, who scored 23 points and collected five rebounds while dishing out four assists. Harris was one of three Spartans in double figures.

Spartans Drop to Giddy Gophers

The Michigan State wrestling team came into Jenison Field House after almost a month-long rest looking to put a 41-0 shutout by Iowa behind them. The Spartans came into the meet versus the No.2 Minnesota Golden Gophers, hoping for a different result this time. Unfortunately, the Gophers had a different idea.

Spartans Face-off against Fighting Illini

The No. 4 Michigan State Spartans (16-1, 4-0) are on the road once again headed to Champaign, Ill. to take on the Fighting Illini (13-5, 2-3) at the State Farm Center this Saturday.

Michigan State goes into the game winning their past nine games and being undefeated on the road.

Weekend Hockey Preview: MSU vs. Penn State

On what may be one of the more critical weekends of this Big Ten hockey season, Michigan State (6-10-3) will host Penn State (4-12-1) for two matchups on Friday, Dec. 17 and Saturday, Dec. 18 at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans are coming off of a disappointing weekend in Columbus, Ohio. They went 0-1-1 against the Ohio State Buckeyes, gaining only two points out of a possible six. Read More…

Spartans Remain Unscathed in Big Ten

Michigan State only needed 40 minutes to defeat the Northwestern University Wildcats Wednesday night by a tally of 54-40 and remain undefeated atop the Big Ten standings.

As they have for most of the year, the Spartans came out slow and only led Northwestern 26-22 heading into halftime. MSU shot 1-11 from three point range in the first half. They ended the game 2-16 from behind the arc.
