Spartans Return from NCAA Indoor Championships

A little altitude never hurt anybody, right?

When it comes to running and competing altitude can definitely be a factor and something that six MSU track and field athletes had to face this past weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championship in Albuquerque, N.M.

By looking at their times and marks you would think that the athletes had an off weekend, but track and field is not about winning and losing. Rather this weekend was about handling adversities and spotlighting some things to work towards in the upcoming outdoor season.

Secret Society – #5 – 3/19/14

Secret Society is back with for episode five and Bradley Allen sat down for an intimate conversation with MSU men’s club soccer coach Scott Dane. Listen as they discuss Scott’s role in the local soccer community and reminisce on the good old days when Scott coached Bradley on his high school junior varsity team.

The two focus in on the 2012 National Championship run for the club soccer team and recap the 2013 season, where rain spoiled their chance to defend their crown.

The Pact – #22 – 3/17/14

With only a three-member panel of Fino, Faith and Lou, MSU men’s hockey, the Detroit Red Wings and the Pistons are the three topics on The Pact’s table this week.

With the Spartans’ regular season coming to an end this past Saturday, The Pact discusses the hockey team’s disappointing season, what the future of Anastos should be, how this team will perform in the Big Ten tournament and who should start in goal in game one on Thursday against Ohio State.

Paul Gilbert, the new volunteer assistant coach for the MSU men’s soccer team, stops by the studio to talk about his new role with the team. Starting goalie Zach Bennett and backup goalie Quinn McAnaney also stopped in to talk about goalkeeping and what it is like to work with Paul.

Zach and Quinn also tackle the challenging, but always entertaining, player questionnaire. What teammate do they never want to score on them during practice? Who is the most athletic person on the team? What women’s soccer player do they believe can score on them?

Host Dan Tyler welcomes new co-host Andre Sims Jr. to the show. Sims Jr, a receiver and punt returner for the Spartans, discusses what it was like being a part of Spartan football history this past season.

Michigan State’s recent Pro Day is also discussed and so is the effect it had on the players entering the upcoming draft.

Spartans are Big Ten Tournament Champions

Early in the first half, Travis Trice hit a pull-up jumper and could be seen saying,

“That’s easy.”

That is the way Michigan State made it look as they defeated the University of Michigan 69-55 Sunday afternoon.

Scott Moore, the voice of Michigan State hockey, joins David Defever for another episode of Behind the Mask recapping MSU’s final weekend of Big Ten and regular season play, along with a preview and predictions of the upcoming Big Ten tournament in Minneapolis, Minn.

Michigan State heads into the Big Ten tournament as a No. 5 seed and will face off against No. 4 Ohio State, a team they have tied three times in the regular season, on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. ET at the Xcel Energy Center.

MSU Rolls Northwestern

On the hardwood at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, there were at least seven slips on the court throughout the first ten minutes of the game.

The falls may have been caused from the slick floor, or perhaps a bit of first half nerves. For Michigan State and Northwestern players, it could have been more than that.

Power Play Key Factor in Win over No. 5 Wisconsin

Heading into the final games of Big Ten and regular season play, Michigan State (11-16-7) was looking to build off their 4-3 win over Michigan last weekend as they played against the visiting Wisconsin Badgers (21-9-2).

And the Spartans did just that.

Six Spartans Head to the NCAA Indoor Championship

This weekend, six Spartans will find themselves among the sun and mountains of Albuquerque, N.M. for the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by the University of New Mexico. Being held on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15, MSU will be represented in seven different events.

The team is taking twice the amount of athletes as last year, and Antonio James and Tori Franklin are the only returnees. Head coach Walt Drenth cites a growing number of athletes who have matured and made a lot of progress over the course of the year.

Weekend Hockey Preview: No. 5 Wisconsin vs. MSU

For the last weekend of the regular season, the Michigan State Spartans (10-16-7) welcome the No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers (21-9-2) to East Lansing this Friday and Saturday. With senior night fast approaching, it will be an emotional weekend for the Spartans who look to build up their confidence and rhythm going into the Big Ten Tournament.

The Wisconsin Badgers are coming off an exceptional weekend, grabbing five out of six points against the Penn State Nittany Lions. They are still chasing No. 1 Minnesota for the Big Ten regular season championship. However, the Badgers are five points behind the Gophers and will need to have a perfect weekend (and a Michigan sweep of Minnesota) in order to jump to No. 1.

Spartans Close Non-Conference Play

The Michigan State men’s tennis team (6-7) will complete their non-conference portion of the schedule this weekend in Louisville, Ky.

Louisville (12-4) is on a four game win streak and is ranked 32nd in the nation. The Cardinals have dominated over their four game span, sweeping three of the four matches.

Pinned Down – #4 – 3/13/14

In the fourth podcast of Pinned Down, host Nick Carver recaps the Big Ten Wrestling Championships.

While the Spartans finished twelfth out of twelve teams in the field, two Spartan wrestlers placed at the tournament and earned NCAA Championship berths.

Mike McClure finished fourth in the Big Ten Championship and John Rizqallah finished seventh.

The 2014 College Football Hall Of Fame ballot was released Thursday, which included three familiar names to Spartan fans.

Receiver Kirk Gibson and running backs Clinton Jones and Lorenzo White were nominated to the exclusive club.
