With road games at Columbus and Toronto, and attempting to protect home ice against Eastern heavyweights Montreal, Tampa Bay and Boston, the Red Wings had their hands full.

Octopi Hockeytown – #6 – 3/25/14

Octopi Hockeytown returns again with a happier tone than last week. The Red Wings took seven of eight points from four games in the past week, and look as though they will be able to make a solid playoff run.

Gustav Nyquist has seven points on the week, scoring six goals and recording one assist with a +8 rating.

Octopi Hockeytown: Weekly Recap

This past week, the Detroit Red Wings and their fans had plenty to be excited about.

The Wings had games against Toronto and Chicago, two Original Six teams, as well as a game against Eastern Conference powerhouse, Pittsburgh. They ended with a home-and-home against the Minnesota Wild.

Detroit opened this week with a game at the United Center against longtime rival, Chicago Blackhawks. The first period experienced a scoreless tie, with both goaltenders standing firm in net.

The Pact – #22 – 3/17/14

With only a three-member panel of Fino, Faith and Lou, MSU men’s hockey, the Detroit Red Wings and the Pistons are the three topics on The Pact’s table this week.

With the Spartans’ regular season coming to an end this past Saturday, The Pact discusses the hockey team’s disappointing season, what the future of Anastos should be, how this team will perform in the Big Ten tournament and who should start in goal in game one on Thursday against Ohio State.

Octopi Hockeytown – #5 – 3/17/14

The Red Wings played two games since the last time Octopi Hockeytown aired. Austin Goodman is back again with more information on the Wings’ banged up team coming down the stretch.

The team got a big win against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday evening. After letting up another third period goal to send the game into overtime and eventually a shootout, fans were biting their fingernails in anticipation for the shootout. Fortunately, the game ended in favor of Tomas Tatar and the Detroit Red Wings after he netted a goal after freezing Oilers goaltender, Viktor Fasth.

Octopi Hockeytown: Weekly Recap

This past week, the Detroit Red Wings experienced four games, a trade deadline, the jersey retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom and two more key players going down with injuries. The week had its ups and downs, but the Red Wings remain tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

In the first game this week, Detroit traveled to the Prudential Center to take on the New Jersey Devils. Adam Henrique opened up the scoring for the Devils within the first minute of the game, but the Red Wings responded with goals from Johan Franzen and Brendan Smith.

Octopi Hockeytown – #3 – 3/4/14

Octopi Hockeytown is back for another episode. The 2014 Sochi Olympics came to a close with Canada winning the gold in men’s hockey for the second consecutive Olympic games, while the United States left Russia with no men’s ice hockey medals.

Austin Goodman, the host of Octopi Hockeytown, will discuss the Olympics, for what he promises will be the last time for at least the next four years. He will evaluate each medal-winning team’s performance and discuss what happened to the United States down the stretch.

Detroit Red Wings Trade Deadline Special

With the NHL trade deadline a little over a week away, the Detroit Red Wings’ front office should expect to be among the most active teams at the deadline. Now that team captain has had surgery on a serious back injury, Detroit will be looking for more leadership and experience as they prepare for a playoff push.

The Red Wings currently sit in eighth position in the Eastern Conference, but teams like Columbus, Ottawa and Washington are just a single point behind that coveted final playoff spot.

Octopi Hockeytown Special Olympics: Men’s & Women’s Medal Match Reviews & Previews

The women’s gold medal hockey game came down to the wire when Canada flipped the switch on the United States and forced overtime after trailing 2-0. The Canadians eventually went on to win with a goal on the power play in overtime.

The same fate came for the USA in men’s hockey, when Finland slaughtered the United States in a bronze medal game of epic proportions, but not in a good way. The USA could not find the scoreboard past Boston Bruins netminder and Finnish Olympian, Tukka Rask.

Octopi Hockeytown Special Episode: Qualification Playoffs Review & Quarter Final Preview

Austin Goodman has deemed the Qualification Playoffs worthy of analysis in a special Olympic men’s hockey episode of Octopi Hockeytown.

Russia, Slovenia, Latvia and the Czech Republic all moved on to the next round of the 2014 men’s Olympic Hockey Tournament in Sochi leaving the tournament with eight remaining teams. Octopi will analytically break down each game; evaluating both statistical and nonstatistical events from the qualification round.

The Pact – #18 – 2/18/14

This week on The Pact, the panel shifts their attention away from men’s basketball and on to the women’s basketball squad. Fino, Faith and Harry dissect the Spartans’ season thus far and look ahead to the team’s next few games against Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In the second portion of the show, Fino moderates as Lou and Austin analyze the USA men’s hockey team and their chances in the Olympic tournament. The three panelists debate styles of play and give predictions on how the tournament will shake out.

Lighting Strikes Wings Late

The Detroit Red Wings would have liked to accumulate two more points before they wrapped up play for the 2014 Winter Olympic break, but they couldn’t Saturday night. Ten Wings will go to Sochi after the loss to Tampa Bay and the rest will take a two week vacation.

The veterans gave the Red Wings a boost late in the first period when Daniel Alfredsson picked the corner of Tampa Bay goalie Ben Bishop off of a pass from behind the net from the magic man. Pavel Datsyuk collected his 800th career point in 816 career games on the first period goal.

Octopi Hockeytown – #2 – 2/5/14

So far, it has been interesting.

The Detroit Red Wings are fifth in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with 62 points in 56 games. They are currently in the last playoff spot of the regular season if the season were to end today. Austin talks about the Wings’ solid play that has helped them wind up in a spot where they can still compete to keep their playoff streak alive.

They go into their last two games before Sochi starting Thursday, against the Florida Panthers, and finishing up Friday against Tampa Bay. Austin Goodman breaks down past week’s play against Philadelphia, Washington and Vancouver.

Strong Goaltending and Canucks’ Lack of Offense Helps Wings

The Vancouver Canucks have struggled as of late.

Its goal scoring and behind the bench presence has been far from exemplary this year. Head coach for the Canucks, John Tortorella, returned for his first game behind the bench in 15 games, after threatening and attacking another team’s players and staff in the locker room back in January.

Vancouver could not quite get a hold on the speedy Red Wings offense, giving the team many chances. Luckily for Tortorella’s team, Eddie Lack was not lacking any sort of confidence between the pipes. The backup goaltender stopped 29 of 30 shots from the Wings and did not give them much space to shoot into.
