NEW YORK — Day 4 of the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament featured two afternoon contests between four of the more well-known basketball powerhouses in the conference. First, it was No. 1 seeded Michigan State taking on No. 5 seeded Michigan, and then it was No. 3 seeded Purdue taking on No. 7 seeded Penn State from Madison Square Garden.

GAME NO. 1: MICHIGAN 75 MICHIGAN STATE 64

The first half was back-and-forth and chippy. But the second half was all Michigan. In a game that had shades of the Jan. 13 matchup in East Lansing, the Wolverines were flat-out the better team on both sides of the ball.

The wealth was spread pretty evenly, too. Moritz Wagner, Zavier Simpson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman each had 15 points while Duncan Robinson added 13 points off the bench. Wagner only had one point in the first half after going 0-for-7 from the field, but quickly dropped seven in the first five minutes of the second.

Miles Bridges led all scorers with 17 points, but was ineffective for most of the first half. His two buckets came from beyond the arc, but his mid-range jumper wasn’t falling. In the second half, he drove to the lane and became a bit more aggressive.

But it was too little too late for Michigan State, who had their Division I leading 13-game winning streak snapped with the loss. They also fail to advance to the Big Ten tournament championship game for the second straight year.

GAME NO. 2: PURDUE 78 PENN STATE 70

The Boilermakers dispensed of the Nittany Lions with relative ease, as they pulled away in the second half to wind up with an eight-point victory. Penn State shot 34 percent from the field (36 percent from three) whereas Purdue shot 52 percent from the field and from three.

Shep Garner led all scorers with 33 points for the Nittany Lions, but Carsen Edwards’ 27 for Purdue weren’t far behind. Isaac Haas added 17 and Dakota Mathias added 15 for Purdue. On the flip side, Tony Carr had 12 points and Lamar Stephens had 14 for Penn State.

The game was tightly contested for most of the first half, until the Purdue lead ballooned to 15 around the 10-minute mark of the second half.

The Wolverines and Boilermakers will face off Sunday afternoon with tip-off scheduled for just after 4:30 p.m. ET. Television coverage will be on CBS.
