Pushing through Rain or Shine

Bad weather is nothing to the Michigan State track and field team as they crossed the finish line with ease this past weekend at North Carolina State in the Raleigh Relays.

Not looking for outstanding performances the relays were just an opportunity to get some work in and allow everyone to compete, according to head coach Walt Drenth.

“It’s always going to be about progress. We need to get the 4×100 meter relay going”, said Drenth. “I was disappointed with the men’s disqualification.”

Up-to-par performances shown by Cynthia Watts, hammer throw contender, and DeVantre Whitelow, 100 meter contender.

“I mean Cynthia was outstanding. As far as competition is concerned we think she could be a national level scorer by the end of the season”, said Drenth. “DeVantre was good, he’s making a lot of progress. There are some things he still needs to iron out, but he was certainly amongst the group that we felt could be better and he was better last weekend.”

Maturity goes a long way, it definitely impacted the start of the indoor season. The team as a whole can still do better, according to Drenth.

“There’s a lot of learning that has to happen between now and the conference meet, said Drenth. “Our primary objective when we come away from these meets is to figure out what we’ve done, how we can improve and what we can learn.”

Due to weather conditions not allowing the outdoor track to finished the Spartan Invitational has been cancelled. The team is now looking forward to the Sienna Heights Invitational Saturday, April 11.
