Spartans End the Weekend Strong at Northwestern TYR Invitational

The Michigan State swim team ended the Northwestern TYR Invite the same way they started it.

The men finished the three-day invitational in first place with a score of 1350 and the women finished in second place behind Northwestern with a score of 856.

To start out the day on Saturday the men were in first with a score of 419. The women were in second place with a score of 287 right behind Northwestern. The team won six out of the 14 events on Saturday.

The Spartan women started Saturday out strong by clenching on to first place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.71.

The men continued their winning performances by taking second and third in the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Jacob Moore had a great race for the Spartans, finishing in first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.27. Teammate Alex Trompke finished in third place with a time of 48.92.

Lachie McLeish, the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.69.

Shelby Lacy had a successful night for Michigan State; she won in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.28.

Sophomore Alec Kandt and junior Ian Rodriguez followed Lacy by taking first and second place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Freshman Chanel Bonin has had an overall great season so far for the Spartans. Bonin won second in the 100-backstroke with a time of 55.53. Earlier in the day, Bonin broke an all-school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.92.

The men ended the night on a good note by finishing in second behind Northwestern in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:42.91.

In diving, the women had a great night. Senior Cristee Cordes ended the night in first place with a score of 264.50 in the one-meter event. Sophomore Madeline Sewell ended in second with a score of 257.90.

At the end of the day Saturday the men were in first place with a score of 874. The women trailed Northwestern with a score of 601.

Moore started Sunday off by taking first in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 21.97.

Bonin continued to have a good weekend for the Spartans, finishing third in the 200-yard backstroke and second in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 25.77.

Sophomores Kandt and Tal Hanani took first and second place in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:00.56 and 2:02.94.

Junior Elizabeth Brown ended the individual events strong for the women by winning second place in the 200-yard freestyle.

Junior Nathaniel Weeks also ended the individual events in the same style for the men by winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:49.31.

To finish Sunday evening, the men won second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:58.85.

The Spartans will be heading to the USA Winter National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina Dec. 4 through Dec. 6.
