Women’s Swimming and Diving Sweeps Toledo

The women’s swim and dive team was at home against Toledo on Friday. They would come out with a win, defeating Toledo 187-110.

The women started the night out strong, winning in the 200-yard Medley with a time of 1:44.16.

“We usually react better when we come indoors,” head coach Matt Gianiodis said. “We closed down the outdoor pool last week. I really wish we would have swam this well last weekend because I think we could have won both meets.

“We are moving in the right direction. Now they get two weeks off from competition at least, then we are back in action two weeks from tonight at Northwestern. I think our girls should be pretty happy with how they swam; I think they should be pretty confident,” Gianiodis said.

Senior Becca Berman and junior Chelsea Abbott continued the night strong by finishing in second and third place in the 1500-yard freestyle. Berman was only .15 seconds behind the leader.

Freshman Chanel Bonin had a great night for the Spartans. She won in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke.

“I think our team did really well overall. We had great swims, comebacks and touch outs. We have been working really hard,” Bonin said. “It was really good to see all of the girls come out and give it their best shot and come out with a win.”

Another top performer for the Spartan women was junior Elizabeth Brown. She finished first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.47 and in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.52.

One of the highlights of the evening was when the women swept in the 50-yard freestyle.

Senior Hannah Pugh won in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.00. Her follow teammate followed behind her with a time of 5:09.42.

The Spartan women ended the night strong by winning first and second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The action will continue next Friday at 5 p.m. for the men’s team against Notre Dame.
