Kelly Smith Leads Spartans to First Series Win

It was a successful weekend for the Spartans as they won their first Big Ten series of the season in Iowa City, Iowa defeating the Hawkeyes 1-0 and 4-0.

The momentum coming from senior pitcher Kelly Smith propelled MSU to victory.

Smith pitched a no-hitter at Secchia Stadium on Wednesday against Eastern Michigan. Smith’s no-hitter was the 20th in program history. She was then named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week by the conference office on Monday.

Smith pitched the first game against the Hawkeyes on Friday and only allowed three hits with eight strikeouts in a 1-0 victory.

An RBI single from Stephanie Sanders in the sixth inning gave the Spartans their one-run victory over Iowa.

MSU lost the second game to the Hawkeyes 5-1.

In her third start of the week, Smith led the Spartans to victory in the third game of the series 4-0.

MSU has four home games this week. They host Central Michigan on Wednesday and then Nebraska for the final series of the season.
