Illinois Stomps Michigan State
April 4, 2014
The Michigan State men’s tennis team lost 6-1 to No. 11 Illinois, snapping their two-game win streak.
The Spartans (8-11, 2-4) came away with only one singles win as they continue to adjust to life without senior co-captain Aaron Pfister, who missed the game with an injury.
Gijs Linders provided the lone victory for the Spartans with a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (8) win against Illinois’ Ross Guignon.
Linders has an 11-12 record in singles competitions and is 5-5 in his last 10 singles matches.
John Patrick Mullane lost his first Big Ten singles match of the season against No. 9 Jared Hiltzik 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(6).
Michigan State will have a chance to avenge their loss on Sunday when they travel to north to Evanston, Ill. to take on No. 37 Northwestern.
The Wildcats (13-9, 2-4) defeated the University of Michigan on Friday 6-1, advancing their record to 10-2 at home.
First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.
