Spartans Take down Cornhuskers

Michigan State continued their home dominance with a win against No. 58 Nebraska. The 4-3 win marked the Spartans first conference win.

“We knew we had to start the winning ways if we were going to try and make a run,” said MSU head coach Gene Orlando. “I’m really proud of how the guys fought.”

It was a day of firsts for Michigan State (7-10, 1-3), who also won their first game of the season against a ranked opponent.

Michigan State won the doubles point, thanks to wins by the doubles teams of Mullane/Lied and Jadun/Linders.

Nebraska’s Boyer/Elsass defeated the doubles team of Davis/Zade for the Cornhuskers lone point in doubles play.

The Spartans clinched the victory without senior co-captain Aaron Pfister, who was out due to an injury.

“I was really impressed with Aaron taking over as our third assistant and how vocal he was,” said Orlando.

One of the players that stepped up in Pfister’s absence was freshman Mac Roy, who won his match 6-3, 7-5.

“I wasn’t really concerned about the outcome or how pretty it looked…I just wanted to get the win,” said Roy.

Mullane and Linders also picked up wins in singles competition.

The Spartans will try and carry this momentum into Sunday’s match vs. Iowa (9-5, 1-1).
