Wings Fall 5-0 in Philly

As the Red Wings walked off the ice at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday evening, they had their heads hung low weighed down by defeat. The Philadelphia Flyers came out with their top lines coming to take a win on home ice. Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell led the Flyers to a demolition style defeat over the Wings as they alone had a combined six points on the night.

Solid goaltending is key in the National Hockey League. Steven Mason had a great representation of what it takes to stand tall against a Red Wing team thriving off of momentum.

“I thought (Steven) played well,” Flyers coach Craig Berube said. “(Detroit) attacks as good as any team in the League, and they put a lot of pucks on the net. I thought he was good.”

The first period ended with a one-goal differential in favor of the Flyers. Niklas Kronwall has played in 51 of 53 games in the regular season and has been leading the defensive end of the ice.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed,” Kronwall said. “I thought in the first we did a lot of good things.…I thought we were fine after the first. In the second period, we were fine until I made a big mistake there, and it cost us that second goal.”

Johan Franzen was out for the game due to recurring concussion issues from an injury that he endured against the Florida Panthers last Sunday.

“I thought we had some self-inflicted wounds. We hadn’t been turning over pucks.…We’ve got to regroup, and we’ve got to play better than this,” coach Mike Babcock said.

Giroux caused the Red Wings a lot of hassle offensively. He assisted on both of Scott Hartnell’s goals, along with making a tally of his own at the halfway point of the third period.

“It’s been a while that we got the first goal of the game. We kind of got momentum out of it, and we kept it the whole game,” Giroux said. “I think we did a better job of getting out of our zone, and that’s when we got more chances offensively.”

Next, the Detroit Red Wings take a three day rest until they face off against the Washington Capitals on Friday at Joe Louis.
