The first taste of victory was had by the men’s swimming and diving team January 23 in East Lansing, defeating Oakland University 154-143 and it came down to the last event to determine who would win.

Leading by two points, junior Kyle Workman swam in the third leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, going 45.89 and narrowing Oakland’s lead heading into the final 100 yards. Senior Nick McGowan entered the water as MSU’s last hope and with quality turns, pulled away going 45.08 and winning by over .50 seconds.

Senior Nick Roberts swam a season-best in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:06.77 and sophomore Ian Rodriguez had a quality race in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning with a time of 57.25.

Senior Pat Falconer had two rare ties in his performances, tying for first place in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.02 and again in the 100-yard freestyle with Workman at 46.46. Falconer was also a part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

The women’s team notched their fourth win of the season, beating the Grizzlies 163-135.

Junior Rebecca Berman posted a season-best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle, going 10:17.76 and earning first place.

The trio of Elizabeth Brown, Sarah Love and Marcella Kupraszewicz earned first, second and third respectively in the 100-yard butterfly, pulling away from Oakland in the second-half of the meet.

Both teams are back in action January 25 for senior day at 2:00 p.m. at McCaffree Pool as the Spartans take on Denison University.
