All that Power

Aerial Powers played in her first game and gave fans a taste of what to expect this season.

Wednesday was the first game of the season for the Lady Spartans, in an exhibition game against Ferris State University. The two have not played against each other since 2006 when FSU lost to MSU 68-47.

MSU dominated the game and won 100-52. Out of the points scored for MSU, 13 of them were scored by the redshirt freshman.

Powers was unable to play last season due to an Achilles tendon injury in her left ankle. It was her first game as a Spartan.

“I felt too anxious when I came out,” Powers said after the game.

She still managed to be one of the top scorers in wednesday’s game.

Powers played a total of 22 minutes, shooting 5-10 field goals, including 0-1 from three point range, and 3-6 from free throws in the game.

“It took me a while to settle down,” Powers said.

And once she did, she became more effective in the game.

Both Powers and head coach Suzy Merchant agreed that as a team, they needed to work on their transition defense, but the team played well as a unit.

“I could’ve played a lot better…I let my emotions get the best of me at some points of the game,”  Powers added.

Although Aerial feels that her game could have been a lot better, Coach Merchant seems very confident in her freshmen girls. She also said that she wants her freshmen to get this time and experience playing in the game.

“I want to see Tori Brandy and Aerial get more minutes because they’re talented freshmen, and need to get the experience early on,” Merchant said.
