Rangers Defeat Red Wings in Overtime

The Detroit Red Wings picked up one point against the New York Rangers on Saturday evening in a 3-2 loss in overtime.

With outstanding play from Jimmy Howard who was the second star of the evening with 37 saves on 40 shots, the Red Wings’ goal production and lineup meshing wasn’t up to par.

Cameron Talbot, the New York Rangers backup goaltender, had himself quite a game as well against the Wings. Talbot played for the second straight game while Henrik Lundqvist is currently resting and nursing an undisclosed injury.

With 32 saves on 34 shots, allowing goals on both even strength and the power play, the Wings couldn’t exactly seal the deal against Talbot.

A goal came from Rangers right winger, Mats Zuccarello, early in the third period to tie up the game and send it into overtime where center, Derick Brassard, snapped one past Howard to close out a 3-2 victory.

“I only had to scoop up the puck. It was kind of bouncing, so I just closed my eyes and shot,” Brassard said.

With this victory on the road, at an iconic ice temple, Joe Louis Arena, one could only imagine that the Rangers wanted to get back to New York with no harm and no foul.

“As a player, it gives you so much energy on the ice. You play with more emotion,” Brassard said of playing before a home crowd. “We want to get back and see our fans.”

Madison Square Garden, the home of the New Yorks Rangers, is currently being remodeled and the team will have their ‘home opener’ Monday, October 28 against the Montreal Canadiens.

While the Rangers’ home arena is being revamped and their starting goalie is nursing an injury, they still managed to come out on top at the Joe for the first time since 1999.

The Wings’ next test will come against the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday, October 30 on the road, where they will continue a stretch against Canadian teams, Winnipeg and Calgary, Friday and Saturday evening.
