Shakey Graves – Roll the Bones

You don’t normally hear of a lot of original-sounding bands coming out of Austin, in fact Texas as a whole tends to follow the same twangy style of country lines. That was, until Shakey Graves. Instead of going the whole looping route that you see a lot of one-man bands doing, Shakey Graves decides to play everything at once. Using his guitar as both a bass and a main guitar line and each foot working a different percussive element, he’s able to establish a sound by himself many bands take at least three to achieve. Take a look at a live video for his song “Roll the Bones” courtesy of the Good Music Club. Read More…

Dead Girlfriends – On Fraternity

If you’re a huge fan of squealy, noisy, and dark electronic pop, then Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Dead Girlfriends is perfect for you. Formerly known as Elite Gymnastics, James Brooks makes the kind of ambient, melancholy pop that is perfect for any indie dramedy that’s ever even thought about being in Sundance. With a strong, decidedly feminist and political message, the lyrics are often just as interesting as the music. Be sure to check out the brand new track “On Fraternity” off the 2013 Stop Pretending EP below. Read More…
