Reinforcements from the Underground

We infused our playlist with some promising underground talent the first couple hours, on top of the usual suspects. I hit up Euphoria last Sunday after missing out on their EP release party at the New Dodge. I’m kicking myself for not listening to them earlier or else I totally would have caught them at a local show – they were even at Mac’s this year! Now I have to wait until they come back from touring Europe. This is what I get for sleeping on local music. Don’t sleep on local music.

Anyway, Euphoria’s promoter also happened to represent other underground talent that I’ve been combing through all week. Tower from New York, Hell Fire from San Francisco, and Spanish thrashers Crimson Slaughter could all use some love. More talent from the underground will soon follow…

A Word on Science Buzzwords

Random thought of the week: Metal songwriting as a whole has seemed to write less party songs and “matured” to writing about space & science n’ stuff. See: Origin, Vektor, Allagaeon, Inquisition etc. It’s refreshing to see, even if all the buzzwords thrown together don’t make any sense. If you’re going to throw around $20 science buzzwords, at least make $20 music, and honestly I have yet to hear a bad science-y band.

This is in sharp contrast to the pure contempt I have for science buzzwords used anywhere else, especially in science. Maybe 4 years of undergraduate science education has sprouted an irreparable disillusionment towards science buzzwords. Though I internally twitch whenever I see nonsensical math lyrics, I can still enjoy the mysticism and the wonder behind all of the abstraction. It takes me back to when there was a sense of awe before, ironically enough, I started doing science. I hope these musicians never do science so that they don’t grow as jaded and crotchety like me.

Special Playlist Next Week!

Every year for Thanksgiving, we dedicate our entire playlist towards a genre we’re thankful for. Hint: look at the last song this playlist. We’ve been compiling all of our favorites of this genre for the past few weeks and our playlist is a work of art. It will surely better than arguing with your family about politics, or pretending to enjoy your aunt’s token abomination flyover dish. Stay tuned folks. See ya next Thursday
