Weekday Wrap Up

Weekday Wrap Up

These Impact staff members are very excited to share what they’ve been listening to this week. Don’t they have such great music taste?

Marketing Director Shelby Doyle

On Sunday, my friends and I took a little 8 hour journey drive home from the UP after some 4th of July shenanigans. As far as music in my car goes, you have two options: radio or CDs. Usually I opt for the radio, but after a weekend in a cabin with only bug spray, beer and white bread I did not have the energy to constantly scan the radio as we drove in and out of reach of different stations. Luckily, my friend has an extensive collection of CDs. The sun was setting and we were all feeling peaceful after a nature-filled weekend, but sad that we had to leave all it’s beauty behind. Band of Horses’ Acoustic at the Ryman played in the background and completed the movie scene we seemed to be unknowingly a part of. Ever since then I have been listening to them – dreaming of log cabins, hammocks, and infinite forests ~

All this Common Ground talk has got me listening to some Earth, Wind & Fire (they perform on Sunday July 13 which is kind of random, but totally cool). My mom was raised in Detroit so Motown was a big part of my childhood – I can never get enough. I have The Best of Earth, Wind and Fire Vol. 1 on vinyl. I don’t think it gets much better than that. Mhmmm September on repeat.

What have you been listening to this week?! Here’s a brief update on what has been going through the headphones of some of our staff members!

WHITE LUNG. This feminist punk band just dropped a new album called Deep Fantasy, and it’s already looking to be one of my favorite punk releases of the year. Is has the same urgency and aggression as Perfect Pussy’s march release, Say Yes to Love (my #1 punk album of the year so far) but with a refreshing and impassioned sense of clarity. Also, the Needledrop just turned my on to an EP from a band called Kiddy Pool? The EP is literally titled Super Pony Perv Plus and it includes songs such as: “Moms and Their Blonde College Age Daughters”, as well as family favorite, “I Guh Guh Got A$$bergers From a Toilet Seat”. It’s electronic/surf/noise madness and it makes me really happy. *not for the faint of heart* Read More…

It’s that time of week again! Check out what some Impacters have been listening to this week and you might just discover something yourself!

Assistant Office Manager and Music Reviewer Sami Leonardo

So I’ve been all about the new Sam Smith album. His voice is beautifully soothing and incredibly soulful. On the other side of the spectrum, I’ve been listening to the clipping album. It’s weird compilations of static and other strange effects that almost make it hard to listen to, but it’s worth it.

So a couple weeks ago, Manchester Orchestra played in Grand Rapids with Kevin Devine and Balance and Composure. I was very familiar with Manchester’s album Mean Everything to Nothing, and just about that. Then I heard them perform Penascola from the album Simple Math and I can’t stop listening to the rest of their discography including their new album Cope which has split many of their fans. I will say I’m a huge fan of the opening tracks on Cope, but haven’t it hasn’t completely won me over yet, will update when I have confirmation.

So I’ve been on a bit of a BADBADNOTGOOD kick lately, going through a bunch of songs they’ve produced with other groups like Tyler, The Creator and an awesome rap song featuring Ghostface Killah and Danny Brown. Their newest album, BBNG2, has been on steady rotation for most of this week Read More…
