American Football – Never Meant

We owe much music to the Kinsella brothers. Front-runners of the midwest emo music scene, they are responsible for bands such as Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls, Make Believe, and many more. Possibly one of the more notorious bands to come out of the musically-inclined family is American Football. They were only together for three years from 1997 – 2000 and only released a self-titled EP and a self-titled LP, but were able to gain critical success after breaking up. With changing time signatures, blunt, melodramatic lyrics, and a general feeling of melancholy, these Chicago suburb natives were clearing a path in the music world without even knowing it. A night of photos: at The Loft with Frontier Ruckus

The Loft in Lansing, MI is where the Impact 89FM recently celebrated their 24th Birthday with Wayne Szalinski, The Lansing Unionized Vaudeville Spectacle, and Frontier Ruckus. There was great Lansing bred music, good beer, plenty of dancing, and hugs among friends. The Impact was lucky enough to have photographer and all around heartthrob Matt Radick there to document the shenanigans.  Look at all of these great shots! Read More…

Portugal. The Man – Bellies Are Full

The best thing to come out of Alaska since refined oil, Portugal. The Man is easily the hardest working band in the game right now. Until 2012, P.TM had released an album every year since their first album dropped in 2006.  Fans of songs such as “So American” or “People Say” might be surprised to learn that they haven’t always been the hippie dippy indie rockers we know and love. Check out the electro-infused psychedelic rock track “Bellies Are Full” off their second LP Church Mouth below. Read More…

Peace – Bloodshake

UK indie band Peace is out to destroy you. With their self-prescribed tag line “Music to F*** You In the Heart,” their debut EP Delicious is full of worldly beats, erratic guitar lines, and waily vocals. Whiny, but not annoying; ambitious, yet controlled, the singer effortlessly carries the music from section to section without skipping a beat. With a full-length due out this summer, this is sure to be a band to watch. Check out “Bloodshake” below. Read More…

As Tall As Lions – Is This Tomorrow?

Long Island’s As Tall As Lions never had a huge following; that is, until they broke up. Three Albums and three EPs over the course of nine years brought the world the bass-heavy, piano-driven ambient rock, and introduced us to a voice we will never forget. From the impressiveness of their vocal range to the genius of song structure, As Tall As Lions was easily one of the most underrated indie rock bands out there. Check out their track “Is This Tomorrow?” off of their final release You Can’t Take It With You below. Read More…

Pygmy Lush – Yellow Hall

It’s always great to see a band showcase their all-around musicianship by completely switching up genres. Pg. 99, a hardcore/metal group, decided they wanted to make some heavy-hearted indie-folk and set out to do just that. Pygmy Lush throws around pendulum-esque guitar riffs over hammering beats, allowing vocals to soar easily overhead. Great music for early mornings and after rough days, Pygmy Lush is just the thing you need to soothe your sorrows. Check out “Yellow Hall” below. Read More…

Blitzen Trapper – Sleepytime In The Western World

Psych-folk rockers Blitzen Trapper have been a Sub-Pop band since 2007 and have released four albums since. The catchy grooves and bluesy twang mixes with elements of psychedelic rock that cause them to sound like a modern-day Lynyrd Skynyrd or even CCR. Simple and accessible, yet rich and full, Blitzen Trapper provides the straight-forward, electro-infused southern rock to make any sunny drive an adventure of life and the soul.
