Asian Music Show 11/11/2013

Happy Pepero Day!  Tonight on the show, we’ve got new music from Korean-American K-pop star Ailee, YouTube Music Awards winners Girls Generation, and a special song by IU and Korean folk legend Yang Hee Eun.

Next Sunday, Nov. 17th, don’t miss the Global Festival 2013 at Brody Hall Complex; the event goes from 12 noon to 5 PM, and is free of charge.  There will be live performances, food, and plenty of activities for the whole family!

Asian Music Show 10/07/2013

Japanese noise rockers Melt Banana are back with their first album in six years! In support of the new album Fetch, they’re embarking on yet another American tour, with two dates in Michigan: October 25 at the Pyramid Scheme and October 28 at the Crofoot in Pontiac.  Tonight we have new music from Korean indie folk artist Kim Mokin, and K-pop veteran Seo In Young.

Asian Invasion 04/22/2013

Happy Earth Day!  We’ll be celebrating late by playing part of the EARTH X HEART LIVE 2013 Concert featuring Taiwanese rock band MAYDAY and Japanese pop-rock band flumpool next week on Monday, April 29th from 9-10 PM. EARTH X HEART LIVE’s purpose is to raise awareness of environmental issues like marine and atmosphere pollution, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to charity.  If you are a fan of the Earth, Asian rock, or just good music, tune in!

Indie Music in South Korea: Number One Korean

Number One Korean

It’s already been four years since I arrived in Seoul for my study abroad program (am I that old already?)  I was excited and ready to wander the city.  It’s a good thing I did, because that’s how I discovered Hongdae.  Hongdae is a very small neighborhood surrounding the artsy Hongik University; the site of Korea’s first punk band Crying Nut and where Korean indie music has lived for the past twenty-some years.  The whole area surrounding Hongdae is in fact a hotspot for young people, as the nearby Yonsei University, Sogang University, and Ehwa Women’s University bring in more students and their college-aged friends.
