Ben Frost – Nolan

Ben Frost is a lot of things and boring is not one of them. Recently he released a brand new album called Aurora that features a lot of experimental instrumental music. This song Nolan is perfect for so many reasons, one being the fact that this song is broken down into many different segments that makes it seem like you’re listening to multiple songs. This is perfect headphone music, once it encloses you in its grasp it grabs a hold of you and takes you to a whole different world of music.

Bleached – For The Feel

Bleached just released the A side to their new 7inch record that will be released September 16th on Dead Oceans. It’s called “For The Feel” and it’s going to be your new favorite song to cruise in your car with all the windows down. It’s upbeat, catchy and features a killer guitar solo which lands it in our spot as the Jam of the Day. If you missed it, last year we did an interview with Jennifer Clavin of Bleached that you can check out here!

How To Dress Well – Face Again

How to Dress Well is taking over the airwaves with his sultry voice and intriguing beats. In “Face Again” Tom Krell’s voice perfectly syncs up with droning music as well as soulful melodies. Tom Krell isn’t afraid to press the envelope in studio as well as in music videos, this one especially since it depicts a ceremonial burial of some sort. Either way How to Dress is one of the artists to watch this year.

Swans – Just a Little Boy (For Chester Burnett)

I was lucky enough to catch the experimental rock gods Swans at Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit Saturday night and they totally floored me. It was a completely out-of-body, cathartic experience for me and 2nd only maybe to seeing the Knife earlier this year in Chicago. They played all new material, but the song that stood out the most for me was the To Be Kind highlight, “Just a Little Boy (For Chester Burnett).” Watching Michael Gira command his entire band with angry thrashing while screaming “I’M JUST A LITTLE BOYYYYYY I NEED LOOOOOOOVE” was insane and made my brain feel like spaghetti. It’s one I’ll remember for a looooong time.

Mac DeMarco – Passing Out Pieces (Video)

Mac Demarco has come out with a new video for his song “Passing Out Pieces” from his album Salad Days that came out on April 1st. The video starts off with a simple disagreement, then things get real weird real fast. There’s a couple murders and a baby with lettuce for a head, yet the song is oddly cheerful. Kids, let this be a lesson to NEVER EVER pour bleach on your cigs. Check out the video after the jump. NSFW! Read More…

Jacuzzi Boys – Double Vision

Miami, Florida’s alternative sensation Jacuzzi Boys are back with their brand new, self-titled album due out September 10th. Breezy vocals soar over zip guitar lines, laser-like keys, tambourines, and hand claps while groovy bass lines keep the album flowing from song to song. A lazy feel to the lo-fi indie makes Jacuzzi Boys a nice, relaxing listen while allowing the listener to reflect on the past, present, and future. Check out their new single “Double Vision” off their upcoming September 10th release Jacuzzi Boys below. Read More…

The Silent Years – Someone To Keep Us Warm

With the recent success of the Detroit indie-pop duo Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Jr, it’s important to think about history. The two members met while recording some music for Joshua Epstein’s former band, The Silent Years. One of the best acts to ever come out of Royal Oak, Michigan, the four piece’s groovy indie rock paved the way for your favorite hits now. While they are not completely dissolved, The Silent Years are on an official indefinite hiatus until Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Jr. is done being so busy. Check out the song “Someone To Keep Us Warm” off their 2006 self-titled album below. Read More…

Okkervil River – It Was My Season

Austin, Texas’ indie rock darlings Okkervil River are back with their seventh album The Silver Gymnasium, out September 3rd on ATO records. Many out there are waiting with bated breath to see if their first album not to be released through Jagjaguwar Records will be different, but if the rest of the album is anything like their first single, fans need not worry. Though they may have turned the intricacies down a bit, they still have a way of making your heart beat to the tempo and tune of their songs. Check out the song “It Was My Season” off their upcoming album The Silver Gymnasium below. Read More…

TV Ghost – Elevator

Creepiness crawling out of Lafayette, Indiana comes in the form of TV Ghost, a five-piece experimental nosie rock-turned-depressing-Cure-esque-type-band-thing. This is the kind of off-kilter, melancholic slow rock that would fit perfectly into one of Ryan Gosling’s newer movies (think Drive if it didn’t have such a cheesy 80′s soundtrack). The name TV Ghost seems to be fitting, as you may get the feeling that someone (or something) might be watching you while listening to their new album out September 3rd. Check out the track “Elevator” off their upcoming album Disconnect below. Read More…
