From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Hop Along present a refreshingly simple style of music that cuts the frills and gets right to the point. With vocals and lyrics akin to a girl version of The Front Bottoms, the music can sometimes get a little awkward, but the groove of the instrumentation keeps it flowing. These guys are just getting up and out there with their first release, so there are only good things to come. Most of us are aware now of the eccentric stylings of Gogol Bordello. Even though they sound like they’re straight out of eastern Europe, their music is perfectly representative of where they actually come from: New York City. The diversity of the lower east side of Manhattan shines through the music in every crash, clang, twink, and twog of a multitude of instrumentation. “Polka meets ska meets blues meets indie” might sound like a weird statement, but if you know Gogol Bordello, it doesn’t seem as strange. In honor of them playing their last live show ever this past weekend, this is The Postal Service at their finest. Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie, All-Time Quarterback!, etc.), Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel), and, at times, Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley, Jenny and Johnny, etc.) spent years and years sending ideas back and forth through the United State Postal Service to finally get a full-length album together in 2003. A decade later, they play their last show at a Lollapalooza after-party to a completely packed and elated crowd. In another great example of Fueled By Ramen’s impeccable ability to ruin artists (see Gym Class Heroes, Fall Out Boy, Midtown, etc.), the decline in ambition and creativity Fun faced in between two albums is abundant. Compare the songs “Some Nights” and any song off Aim and Ignite and you’ll see what I mean. All we can do is shake our heads and be glad they had one amazing album before completely checking out and slacking off. Post-rock legends The Six Parts Seven may be on a hiatus currently, but their music still resonates widely. Easily some of the best music to listen to while studying, relaxing, falling asleep, or waking up, The Six Parts Seven doing a great job of making everything seem alright. From Kent, Ohio, soft guitar lines, waxing and waning horn sections, and a smooth, steady beat flow like a river, in through your ears, through the blood stream, and out with a sigh of relief. Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn and company make The Mynabirds. This is what you want from female-front indie pop: instrumentals that aren’t cliche, a sweet voice that can be as sad as it can be quirky, and (most importantly) control over “cutesy” elements put into it. The result is some good, unapologetic indie pop that isn’t afraid to tell the listener that females can be sweet and badass at the same time. San Diego, California’s The Kabbs were just four dudes who liked to hang out and jam, until they got their act together and started working towards actually making music. What resulted was some fresh garage rock with blues-y undertones and a twang-y drawl. With a production style similar to that of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, the EP has a real throwback feel, making you feel like you’re listening to a band that’s about to break out. UK’s indie rock darlings Little Comets are back with their sophomore release Life Is Elsewhere. The boisterous vocals are alone enough to encourage a listen, not to mention the dance-filled instrumentation that moves the album along effortlessly. Chock full of blissful romps and moody jams a la Foals’ more recent work (see “Western Boy” or “Violence Out Tonight”), the album pulses along, establishing an emotional sequence not seen on most generic indie rock albums.
