Systems Officer – In This World

Side project of Zach Smith (amazing bassist of Pinback), Systems Officer was never meant to go anywhere. With some time after the 2007 Pinback Autumn of the Seraphs, Smith was able to record Systems Officer’s only album, the aptly-titled Underslept. His signature Pinback sound shines through the entire album, but the music as a whole is much more down-tempo and moody. Original piano lines and creative drum fills give the album a very full sound while still maintaining a very minimalist, separated feeling. Check out their song “In This World” off the album Underslept below.

Alpine – Hands

Australian six-piece Alpine make pop music the likes of which are unmatched. Taking a more “sophisticated” take on indie-pop, Alpine has opened for The Jezebels, played SXSW, and was named Triple J’s Feature Album, all before experiencing an American release. Due for USA release in May, A Is For Alpine is chock full of hypnotic beats, fuzzy synths, and sweet harmonies. Check out the unsettling music video for “Hands” off their album A Is For Alpine below. El Ten Eleven – Central Nervous Piston

Los Angeles duo El Ten Eleven could easily be classified as a wunderkind. Using all sorts of effects, loops, electronic drum kits, and harmonics, you’ll be amazed at the sounds these two rockers can come up with. Formed in 2002, they’ve put out five album, each a little different than the last. The guitarist plays a handmade, double-neck guitar (one of which is a bass, the other being a standard guitar); it’s incredible to watch him tap bass notes and guitar notes at the same time. The instrumental mathy post-rock they put out is nothing like any other music out there. With creative riffs, layering upon layering of loops, and time-centered beats, El Ten Eleven is probably the most creative band you’ve heard in a while. Check out “Central Nervous Piston” off their 2005 self-titled album below. Read More…

The Basement – 2/28/13

Big thanks to Reconnect and Kyle Brown for coming in and hanging out tonight.

Be sure to tune in next week when we have Simien the Whale in the studio

Here’s tonight’s playlist:

Jenny Lewis – The Next Messiah

Straight out of California, Jenny Lewis was destined for greatness. Starting as a child actress, she was able to snag roles in The Wizard, Pleasantville, and Uncle Tom’s Cabin to name a few. Turning her focus towards music, she was able to form the ever-popular Rilo Kiley and hit it big with the band until splitting in 2011. Jenny Lewis wasn’t done though, releasing several solo albums and starting a project with boyfriend John Vanderslice appropriately titled Jenny and Johnny. The standout song of any of these projects is this nearly nine minute, three-part romp about a girl and her father. As groovy as it is long, the jazzy flow of the song makes it feel a lot shorter. Check out the track off Acid Tongue below. Read More…

Efterklang – I Was Playing Drums

Copenhagen down-tempo indie rock band Efterklang takes their name from the Danish word meaning”reverberation” or “remembrance;” a word that is all too fitting for the band. Bass-heavy, piano-driven tunes provide the perfect platform for deep contemplation about life, love, or what you’re going to eat for dinner. Though they’re a three member band, eight members are added for their live show, creating a spectacular display of music and movement that is sure to stick with anyone who catches a glimpse. Check out the music video for “I Was Playing Drums” off of their 2009 release Magic Chairs below. Read More…
