Exposure 4/15/14: COGS & Inside Out

Host Abbie Newton talks to Stefan Fletcher, who is in his forth and final term as the Council of Graduate Students President, about his presidency and plans for the future. Newly elected COGS president, Emily Bank, and former COGS president and Director of Student Health Education at Olin Health Center Dennis Martell join the conversation. We also talk about Lou Anna K. Simon’s President’s Report, Inside Out. The report follows nine MSU students for a year, giving us an inside look at the lives of some of the most dynamic Spartans.

Inside Out President’s Report: A look at the lives of nine Spartan students

Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon released her annual report a couple weeks ago. Last year, the report was called Spartans Will 360 and it showcased the work MSU professors and faculty were doing around the world. This year, the report was called Inside Out. It showcased the lives of 9 Michigan State students. A production team followed the students around for a full year as we began to understand what a Spartan life looks like. Three of these students and one student producer came on Exposure to talk about the experience.

Exposure 4/1/14: Gender

On Exposure, we delve into the topic of gender. Abbie Newton interviews various people in the community about gender as it is defined today. Michigan State University Professor in Communications Kelly Morrison and Psychology Professor NiCole Buchanan join the conversation to discuss gender as it is associated with identity, expression, science and social construction. Dr. Kelly Morrison’s son, Kyle, also joins the show to add to the conversation.

Operation Freefall sheds light on sexual assault

People usually go sky-diving to experience the thrill and cross it off the bucket list. But, in 2001 a woman named Kelly Greene used skydiving as a tool to empower and overcome her past. She was sexually assaulted, but instead of fearing the anniversary of the assault, she decided to overcome another fear of hers: heights. Now, Michigan State University’s Sexual Assault Intervention Team is joining the initiative. Volunteers are raising money and some will even be jumping from an airplane. Exposure Director Abbie Newton talks with MSU psychology student Brianna Jecmen about the Intervention Team and Operation Freefall. For more information on how to make donations, click here.
