Grey Area | Jerry Paper (feat. Weyes Blood)

Pop-weirdo and home producer, Lucas Nathan, has quietly built an impressive catalog of idiosyncratic jazz-tinged records under the moniker Jerry Paper. After adopting the name in 2012, he’s released over five topsy-turvy projects filled with electronic-pop tracks about falling in love with giant chameleons or escaping the realm of simple binary. His distinctively low and warbly voice pairs perfectly with the geeky computer instrumentals he throws together with the weirdest sounds he can find. Paper has also collaborated with many respected musicians in the outsider music scene, including Canadian jazz specialists BADBADNOTGOOD.

“Grey Area” enlists psychedelic pop artist Weyes Blood to sing backing vocals over top of Paper’s wavy island instrumental. His falsetto counters her soft coos warmly and gives way to the first verse where he drops the high-pitch and croons over the beat with equal parts quirkiness and charm. A saloon ready piano tip-toes over the hook as the doo-wops of Paper and Blood come back to tickle the tips of your ears. The juicy drums hold steady and hints of flutes and strings peek through the cracks behind Paper’s baritone once again. The clear-as-day songwriting and flush production are both steps in the right direction for Jerry Paper and his newest record, Like A Baby. Check it out now, released by legendary label Stone’s Throw Records!
