DJ Spotlight of the Week | Erica Marra

DJ+Spotlight+of+the+Week+%7C+Erica+Marra

This week’s DJ Spotlight is on Erica Marra! Not only is she a Journalism student with a minor in Peace and Justice Studies, but she is also the host of Pity Party, Impact’s Wednesday show that focuses on punk, emo, and “everything in between.” Erica was previously our Marketing Director before started working for Fusion Shows, so we’re happy she’s still with us!

1. What made you decide to join Impact and become a DJ?
I had such a hard time finding friends with common interests my freshman year, so much that I almost transferred out. Then I found out about the Impact, and after talking to some of the other members, I realized, “Oh, everyone I want to be friends with are right here!” That pretty much did it in for me. The Impact became my little home away from home.

2. What has been your best on air experience?
I’ve only been hosting the show on my own for a little while, but just noticing when people get excited about their request being played or getting feedback about how they really like a certain playlist is so reassuring. When there’s a positive connection between what I’m doing and what listeners are feeling, it makes all the difference. And it makes me way less nervous!

3. How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
It already has! I wouldn’t have the job I do right now if it wasn’t for this radio station. The Impact has taught me so much about the industry, so much about being a professional. I owe it a ton.

4. What is your favorite part of the station?
The people! I’ve met so many genuine people here whose friendships I really value. Also, it’s a big perk to be able to work alongside your friends.

5. If you could play an artist non-stop on the air, which would it be?
I’m going to go with Joyce Manor or Hop Along. Both bands are crazy talented. You could listen them for two straight hours and still be enthusiastic about what you’re hearing from minute 5 to minute 105.

6. What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
I had the opportunity to work Bled Fest for the first time this year, and that was an awesome experience. It was very full circle. The year before I was just another sweaty kid in the crowd, and then this year they gave me a staff shirt and a walkie talkie. I think I was standing side stage for Old Gray when it really hit me, and I was like, “Holy [crap], this is exactly where I want to be right now.”

Our next DJ Spotlight of the Week will be out on  10/17.
