Creativity Denied: NCAA Denies Green Bluelines

Well, it was a good idea while it lasted.

Three weeks before the start of hockey season, the NCAA hockey rules committee denied Michigan State a one-year waiver for Munn’s recently repainted blue lines.

MichiganHockeyNow.com broke the story this evening on Twitter.

The brainchild of MSU athletic director Mark Hollis, the green blue lines debuted in mid-August. In an article published by the Detroit Free Press, Hollis explained his reasoning for the radical change.

“It is about the heritage and the color of the school without taking any of the integrity of the game away,” Hollis told the Free Press. “It just gives a unique story to a program that is very proud of its heritage, its logo, its color, and gives us something that is kind of unique.”

The green blue lines were met with mixed reviews among college hockey coaches and fans alike. While the University of Michigan’s hockey coach Red Berenson was not too high on the idea, Ferris State University’s coach (and MSU alum) Bob Daniels supported it.

MSU released a statement this evening regarding the NCAA’s decision.

“The NCAA hockey rules committee has denied the request for a one-year rules waiver to alter the color of the blue lines to green. We understand and respect the committee’s decision and the blue lines will be in place for the start of the season.”

The Spartans start their season with an exhibition opener against Western Ontario on October 4 at Munn Ice Arena.
