Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks – Little Fang

Todays’ Jam of the Day is “Little Fang” the first single from Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks. The newly formed super group have brought back a long forgotten genre, horror-pop. The trio is made up of Animal Collective’s Avey Tare, Ponytail’s Jeremy Hyman and Dirty Projector’s Angel Deradoorian. Enter The Slasher House drops April 8th on Domino but you can catch them on tour in Ann Arbor, MI at the Blind Pig 4/18.

Arcade Fire @ The Palace of Auburn Hills

If you missed the Arcade Fire show at the Palace this past Monday, I have a solution that is the second best thing to being there.

Step 1: Make a “greatest hits” playlist and shuffle it.
Step 2: Put some aluminum foil in the microwave and cook for 120 minutes.
Step 3: Watch the pretty colors and hear the pretty music.

Mario Cuomo makes long hair look rebellious again in the new video from his rock ‘n’ roll band. “The Righteous One” is the latest single from the Chicago natives, The Orwells. The song is slated for a March 24th release but we might see it again on their next album due early summer.

The music festival at SXSW 2014 kicked off today in Austin, TX. Whether you’re fording the crowds in the Lone Star capital or the snow melt back home, here are the featured bands from the Mitten playing this week. Keep an eye and and ear on these artists and let’s show ‘em some love!

Editorial: Genres, Breakdowns, and Drops

Perhaps it was after digital media became so widespread, or maybe it was the internet, or it could be a change in music sub-culture itself, but whatever the reason genres seem to have taken on a wholly new entity. Their original use as a categorizer seems moot now, instead replaced with arguments on the subtle differences between subgenres. Go look at any music video on youtube and you’ll fine approximate comments like this: “This band is clearly glitch-hop whereas that is dubstep;” “These guys are totally melodic death metal, how can you even say this is metalcore?”
