Students petition College of Education to address problems with 5th-year teaching internship  –  Jared Ramsey

Students of the College of Education have created a petition addressing the state of their college’s 5th year internship program.

The petition is asking the College of Education to make the program more accessible for students who are low-income or first-generation. The petition also addresses mental health with the creation of support systems to combat stress within the program. The internship is a 40 hour work week on top of classes.

According to students within the College of Education, the nature of the program has impacted their mental health and their financial standing.

Secondary Education senior Olivia Gundrum and Julia Alvarez, a current student and intern in the fifth-year program, created the survey to gain insight into how their peers felt about the program.

The survey reached 147 students and the results were overwhelmingly negative. The survey found that 69.5% of students were not in favor of the program. Resulting in the petition being filed, that now has 105 signatures.
