Queen Naija is a young and talented music artist from Ypsilanti, MI. Prior to the music, she was a contestant on “American Idol” before earning her initial fame through YouTube as one-half of “Chris and Queen” alongside her then-husband, Chris Sails. Unfortunately, the relationship ended, but Queen Naija moved on with her music career. 

Over the past few weeks, she has been releasing music videos leading up to the release of her debut album, missunderstood, which released on Oct.30. It features several notable artists, including Lil Durk, Jacquees, Mulato, Russ. The album is made up of 18 tracks, but the track “Too Much To Say” stood out in particular. 

The song is an emotional ride that showcases Queen Naija’s personal struggles and how she has persevered through traumatic experiences. It captures how she usually hides a lot of her personal life in her music, and she explains in an interview with Apple Music that she wanted to show people more of who she is. 

“I feel like I’m a misunderstood person overall; people misinterpret the things I say,” she said. “It’s the debut, and I just basically wanted to peel off more layers to who I am. I wanted people to get to know me more, get to like my sound. I really just wanted to mark my place here in the R&B world.”

And with this album and song, Queen Naija did just what she wanted. The chorus reveals how she keeps so many painful and traumatic memories inside. 

“I got too much to say/

Yeah, I got too much to say/

I got too much I hide/

I got too much inside/

I got too much”

The chorus alone is deeply emotional, but she elaborates on this in a verse after the chorus. 

“I got scars from the past I don’t talk about/

And I could probably ruin lives if I run my mouth/

Put makeup over my bruises and fake a smile”

In the interview with Apple Music, she explained how she is transitioning from YouTube fame and used this album to demonstrate her development as growth as an artist and as a person. 

“I’m opening up to certain things, like about certain things in my life that people don’t really know about,” Queen said. “And I want to bring that connection back, especially since I’ve been away from YouTube for so long, in an artistic way. And also, it’s just I’ve grown. My sound has grown.”

“Too Much To Say” is a great track, consisting of great vocals from Queen Naija while she showcases an elite range of subject matter as she is opening up to the fans about her personal life in her debut album.
