Octopi Hockeytown – #7 – 4/8/14

In the seventh edition of Octopi Hockeytown, host Austin Goodman discusses how the Detroit Red Wings have accumulated eight points since the last time Octopi aired.

As the team continues to solidify a playoff spot coming down the stretch, recent opponents are losing time to catch up to the Wings who currently sits in the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Red Wings began the week on a rocky note, losing two games in regulation. The first loss came against the Columbus Blue Jackets, who currently sit behind them in the last wild card spot in the East with 87 points. The second loss was handed to the Red Wings in high-scoring fashion, losing a five to four game to the Montreal Canadiens on home ice.

The team finished up the week getting four of four points against a falling Toronto club that brought their team’s streak to eight straight losses in regulation. The final score landed in favor of the Wings, 4-2. The Wings then took on the Tampa Bay Lightning on the following day and managed to squeak out two points with a 3-2 victory.

The following week the Red Wings took four of six points, finishing off the week with 88 points in 78 games played. After the loss to Montreal, the Red Wings had not lost again until they met the Habs and they handed them another loss in the same fashion of five goals.

After that discussion was complete, Austin opened up two segments that can arguably be intertwined. He began talking about Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg and how they will impact the team coming down the stretch and into the potential playoffs. Austin finishes up with the ultimate question, with four games left, can the Red Wings make the playoffs for their 23rd consecutive season?

Things are getting tight around the NHL, but the Wings are starting to pull things together at the right time. We will talk about Gustav Nyquist, Jimmy Howard and all the fallen Wings that have returned in the last segment of today’s edition of Octopi Hockeytown.
