EAST LANSING – Michigan State University President Samuel L. Stanley announced his resignation earlier today.

Stanley sent an email notifying all students and faculty that he has handed in his “contractually required 90-day notice of resignation to the Board of Trustees.”

Stanley has had strong support from students, staff, faculty and more.

“I know very well from the outpouring of support that I’ve had from students, staff, faculty, shared governance, alumni donors and others that many of you are profoundly disappointed by this decision,” Stanley said.

He said he has “lost confidence” in the current Board of Trustees and “cannot in good conscience continue to serve this board as constituted.”

Even with his resignation, Stanley still believes the university is in a good place.

“Despite the current turmoil, the fundamentals of the university are very strong.”
