EAST LANSING, Mich— Michigan State coach Leah Johnson has added middle blocker Lauren Schutter to the 2022 recruiting class.

“Lauren is a true hidden gem,” Johnson said. “She comes from a small town and has worked hard at her craft. Lauren is truly committed to getting better and it shows in the gains she has made in the past year. She’s a quick-twitch athlete with the ability to really influence the game at the net as a blocker.”

Schutter, an Alma, Kansas, native is a two-time first-team All-State selection who signed her initial national letter of intent to Illinois State on Nov. 12 before following Johnson to MSU.  As a senior at Wabaunsee High School, she registered 508 kills, 174 blocks and a .385 hitting percentage. She also helped lead Wabaunsee to a 32-10 record a senior and a berth in the Kansas Volleyball Association State Tournament.

Overall, Schutter accumulated 1,156 career kills and 482 career blocks during her high school career.

“I love the campus, my future teammates, and the overall atmosphere of Michigan State,” Schutter said. “The coaches have a great vision for the program, and I know I want to be a part of it. Along with the athletic side of things, I know I’ll get a quality education. The resources and opportunities at MSU are endless.”

She is a three-sport athlete as well, participating in basketball and track and field where she was also a two-time All-State selection.
