Uncomfortable Enough for You? | “bury a friend” by Billie Eilish

The day is finally here, Halloween. However you choose to celebrate, there is one song that encapsulates what Halloween should sound like, and that song is “bury a friend” by Billie Eilish. In an interview with Alternative Press, Billie said that the inspiration for “bury a friend” was “literally from the perspective of the monster under my bed. If you put yourself in that mindset, what is this creature doing or feeling?” There’s nothing more spooky than thinking of the monster that lives under your bed.

Want to amp up the scariness of the song even more? If you listen closely to the backing track, you can hear a dentist drill used to increase the discomfort. FINNEAS, Eilish’s brother and producer of “bury a friend,” reveals this and the unedited sound in an interview with Jimmy Fallon.

Overall, Billie Eilish is one of my favorite artists of all time, and I think of “bury a friend,” and the entirety of WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, as one of the greatest albums of 2019. Other people seem to agree with me, seeing as she won five out of the six Grammy Awards in which she was nominated for 2019.

This Halloween, go back and listen to “bury a friend” when your costume party is filled with cringey outfits, or that haunted house wasn’t thrilling enough. Billie Eilish is sure to change the vibes very quickly.
