EAST LANSING— On Monday, the Michigan State field hockey team added midfielder Maddie Babineau, a Providence graduate transfer, to the 2021 roster.

“We’re very excited to add a talented and experienced player like Maddie to our program,” MSU head coach Helen Knull said. “She was an all-league player at Providence and had a really strong career as a collegian, plus has international experience playing for Canada. She’s a strong midfielder who sees the field really well and we think she will be a tremendous addition to our team next year.”

During her three seasons at Providence, Babineau started in 66 games, collected 27 points and scored six goals. As a sophomore in 2018, she was third on the team with 12 points and three goals. For her efforts, she was selected to the All-BIG EAST second team in 2018.  After starting nine games in 2021, Babineau was an All-BIG EAST first team selection.

She recently graduated from Providence with a degree in elementary/secondary education.

She will add veteran experience for a young Spartan squad that went 2-14 in 2021, with both wins coming against Indiana. Currently, MSU is set to return six out of its top seven scorers and starting goaltender Jade Arundell. Only four players (midfielder Cara Bonshak and forwards Lia Sinisi, Jillian Mahon and Meredith Ross) are set to graduate. Mahon is a redshirt senior, so she still has one year of eligibility remaining.
